Introduction

Founder, Mente Sana Integrative and Functional Psychiatry

Dr. Maricela Tonie Beltran is the visionary behind Mente Sana Integrative and Functional Psychiatry in Newport Beach, California. As founder and CEO, she specializes in comprehensive psychiatric evaluations that integrate conventional neuropsychiatry with functionalmedicine principles. Her practice assesses nutrition, sleep, stress management, environmental exposures and genomic factors to uncover root causes and promote longterm recovery.

A diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Beltran draws on a robust academic foundation: an MD from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine; an MPH focused on community health from California State University, Long Beach; a preliminary year in internal medicine at UC Irvine Medical Center; and a psychiatry residency at Loma Linda University. To stay at the forefront of integrative care, she is completing the Integrative and Functional Medicine Fellowship at the UC Irvine Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and maintains certifications in MedicationAssisted Treatment and traumafocused cognitive behavioral therapy.

Dr. Beltran’s experience encompasses interventional psychiatry: she serves as an interventional psychiatrist at Pacific Mind Health TMS, providing neuromodulation therapies such as transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatmentresistant conditions. She is also a consult liaison psychiatrist at Providence St. Joseph Hospital, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to manage complex cases. Her reputation for thorough, evidencebased evaluations is reflected in testimonials from attorneys and colleagues who cite her clarity, timeliness and compassionate demeanor.

Fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. Beltran ensures that patients and legal professionals can access bilingual intake forms, educational materials and consultations. Her website offers downloadable resources and regular blog posts on integrative psychiatry, workers’ compensation updates, wellness strategies and emerging research, positioning her practice as a knowledge hub. She is available for inperson and secure teleevaluation appointments and provides clear referral pathways outlining service areas and typical report turnaround times.

Teaching and scholarship remain central to her career. Dr. Beltran has educated medical students and residents at Loma Linda University, Western University of Health Sciences and California University of Science and Medicine; she also designed an academic course on methamphetamine addiction and mental health. Her research portfolio includes community mentalhealth initiatives and comparative studies of substance use in immigrant communities. She regularly presents at Grand Rounds and community events on topics such as Latino mental health and professional resilience.

Dedicated to social justice, Dr. Beltran volunteers with the Refugee Health Alliance in Tijuana, Mexico, where she provides psychiatric care, trauma counselling and mentalhealth training to migrant populations. Her international experiences in Peru, Ecuador and El Salvador further inform her culturally responsive approach. As an active member of the American Psychiatric Association and American Medical Association, she upholds the highest professional standards while continually advancing her knowledge.
