I am an internationally known expert witness, teacher, and author with over 50 years of experience in clinical, industrial, educational, military, and forensic audiology. For nearly 25 years, as part of my practice, I served as an expert witness in over 120 cases, specializing in head and neck trauma, including traumatic brain injury (TBI) and whiplash, audiovestibular disorders, noise and acoustics, noise-induced hearing loss, acoustic trauma, tinnitus, hyperacusis, and central auditory processing disorders. I have served as an expert witness in bellwether cases for these conditions in U.S. DOJ and 3M litigations. I have evaluated patients of all ages, including multiple disabled individuals, infants, adults, and seniors over 100 years old. Across all applicable ages, I evaluated individuals for Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD), including patients with acquired disorders from head and neck trauma, aging, acoustic trauma, asphyxia, and neurotoxic exposure.

As a medical audiologist, I have worked in clinical diagnostics and have experience in hearing science, neurology, otology, and neurotology. I possess extensive knowledge of the electrophysiology of the human audiovestibular system. For example, I measure hair cell activity in the inner ear and neural transmission within the central auditory nervous system, including the inner ear, brainstem, and auditory cortex, using complex auditory electrophysiological testing. In balance testing, I have performed and evaluated hundreds of Electronystagmography and Dynamic Posturography balance examinations, as well as vestibular myogenic evoked potentials for superior canal dehiscence.

Over the years, I have consulted for various Fortune 500 companies, including 10 years at British Petroleum and other petroleum producers; 13 years as the audiology consultant for Chevron refineries in Richmond and El Segundo, California; and 15 years at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in San Clemente, California. My duties included determining the nexus between industrial accidents, noise exposure, and acquired hearing loss, tinnitus, and hyperacusis. In 2011, I introduced the first fetal noise protection protocol in the oil industry, in collaboration with my health and safety colleagues at British Petroleum and subsequently at Chevron.

I have extensive experience evaluating soldiers and veterans for medical disability claims, including providing Toxic Exposure Risk Activity (TERA) opinions. As a specialist with the Veterans Evaluation Service (VES), I am a certified examiner and have opined on more than 2000 cases for the Veterans Administration involving acoustic trauma, noise-induced hearing loss, and tinnitus, as well as cases due to head trauma, ototoxic exposure to jet fuels, burn pits, Agent Orange, heavy metals, and uranium.

During my career, I fitted and tested various amplification devices for thousands of patients of all ages with varying degrees of hearing loss, designed custom earmolds, conducted real-ear and sound testing on numerous types of hearing aids, bone-anchored hearing aids, and bimodal cochlear implants, and created custom hearing instruments for individuals with difficult-to-fit ears.

In audiology, I have written more than 50 educational articles and recently contributed a chapter on forensic audiology to a practice management text. I have also presented at numerous state and national audiology academies, including the House Ear Clinic, and, as a guest lecturer, taught university-level courses in hearing and balance diagnostics and treatment. I have authored articles on auditory processing disorders, sudden hearing loss, acoustic phonetics, hearing aids, environmental acoustics, acoustic trauma, airbag deployment, concussion, asphyxia, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), noises of war, synaptopathy, and auditory neuropathy. I have also written about temporal lobe lesions from hypoxia, debilitating tinnitus, tinnitus and insomnia, labyrinthine concussion, extended high-frequency hearing loss, chronic migraine and headaches, central presbycusis, fetal hearing protection, whiplash, neck injury, pain hyperacusis, and neuroplasticity. In 1976, I received the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Since 1999, I have been Board Certified (ABAC) by the American Board of Audiology. I also hold a license in Dispensing Audiology in the State of California.
