Dr. Tony Abraham is a board-certified psychiatrist with broad clinical experience in general, addiction and forensic psychiatry in both the Adult & Adolescent population. He currently serves as a staff psychiatrist at Newport Institute in Orange County, California, providing psychiatric care to young adults in a residential mental health setting, and as an Adolescent Forensic Psychiatrist at Rite of Passage, Inc., delivering care to youth in juvenile detention and rehabilitation programs across South Florida.
Dr. Abraham earned his medical degree from the SRM Medical College & Research Center in Chennai, India, and completed his ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency at Community Health of South Florida, Inc. in Miami. During residency, he was appointed Chief Resident, reflecting his leadership and commitment to mental health education and advocacy. His training included extensive work in community health care, crisis intervention, preventative care, substance use disorders, and management of complex psychiatric conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Over the past decade, Dr. Abraham has served in a variety of clinical roles, including inpatient psychiatry, telepsychiatry, community-based healthcare and even substance abuse counseling as part of a Medication-Assisted Treatment Program in New York during the height of the Opioid Epidemic prior to his residency. His experience spans across both public and private systems of care, from residential treatment centers to juvenile justice programs, and he is familiar with the Medico-Legal system as it pertains to psychiatric care in communities. He is particularly passionate about integrating culturally sensitive care in underserved communities and working with racially and ethnically diverse populations.
Dr. Abraham is actively involved in research and has presented nationally on topics such as the use of telepsychiatry among minority populations and the intersection of mental illness and capital punishment. He holds medical licenses in both California and Florida and is certified in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), Clozapine REMS, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
A multilingual provider fluent in English, Malayalam, Tamil and partially in French, Dr. Abraham brings a global perspective and holistic approach to psychiatry. Outside of clinical work, he has volunteered as a crisis counselor, been involved in teaching residents & medical students, and led wellness initiatives for resident physicians.
