Introduction

Dr. Adhia is a triple Board-Certified Forensic Psychiatrist. He is among fewer than a dozen Board-Certified Forensic Psychiatrists in the US who are also Board-Certified in Brain Injury Medicine. He assesses all psychiatric cases and malingering with special experience in cases that cross over and between psychiatry and brain injury questions. He is qualified to evaluate Traumatic Brain Injury, concussions and Neurocognitive Disorders like Dementia. Dr. Adhia's practice is divided between forensic/expert witness work for plaintiff and defense, and clinical psychiatry. In addition, he consults to attorneys and serves as an expert witness in civil, criminal and military court cases. He conducts psychiatric medical assessments, IMEs, and review of medical and legal records to form well-reasoned findings and opinions. Dr, Adhia is available for testimony.

In 2019, Dr. Adhia was appointed to the Governor’s Advisory Committee to the Texas Board of Criminal Justice on Offenders with Medical or Mental Impairments. Appointed by Governor Abbott and confirmed by the Texas State Senate.

Dr. Adhia has served on the faculties of the University of Texas Health and Science Center, Department of Psychiatry and University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.

In clinical practice, Dr. Adhia served as Medical Director of a Mental Health Clinic and in Correction Hospitals treating patients and supervising mid-level providers to establish treatment protocols including medication management. In patient-treatment, in a clinic or private facility he draws on his significant expertise in psychopharmacology and proper medication management to treat mental illness. New treatment options using medication is evolving daily as research addresses difficult to treat conditions like PTSD and Mania / Bipolar Disorders. Dr. Adhia has treated hundreds of patients with complex and disabling psychiatric conditions intertwined with other health issues. Diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning are key strengths in his clinical practice, as well as assessing damages in civil litigation.

Dr. Adhia has conducted dozens of competency evaluations, In probate cases, whether a testator is living or deceased, competency is required to form intent, enter into a contract (including trusts and business transactions) and establish testamentary capacity. A lack of competency can contribute to susceptibility to undue influence. Dr. Adhia finds his expertise in psychopharmacology (drugs, prescribed or over the counter) to be invaluable in cases of health-compromised individuals. Brain function, Dementia and Alzheimer's (now diagnosed as Neurocognitive Disorders) may also be factors, all of which are assessed by Dr. Adhia.

Before turning to the private sector, Dr. Adhia treated mentally ill men in the correctional system including psychiatric hospital, the Jester IV, Supermax facility Polunsky Unit, and death row inmates, treating some of the most violent and mentally ill offenders. He evaluates competency to stand trial, and claims of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI.) In private practice and corrections, he is experienced in treating addiction to alcohol, prescription and over the counter drugs, and opioids. He has also treated patients with Intellectual Development Disorders (IDD), Autism and psychotic conditions in correctional settings and at the State Supporting Living Center in Texas.

Dr. Adhia is experienced in the standard of care in correctional facilities and correctional psychiatric hospitals.

In his free time, Dr. Adhia volunteers with Physicians for Human Rights, conducting forensic assessment of victims of Human Trafficking, sexual assault, and kidnapping or false imprisonment. Not surprisingly, he has found PTSD, Depression and/or Anxiety Disorders are often present.

Dr. Adhia's professional commitments include acting as a contributing editor to StatPearls, a Brain Injury Medicine publisher of peer-reviewed e-books; he is committed to medical education (formerly Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UTMB). He serves on the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law (AAPL) Committees on Forensic Neuropsychiatry and Human Rights & National Security.
