Dr. Peter C. Baker, M.D. is a board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physician with nearly three decades of experience at high-volume university medical centers, including his current role at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. He has provided care to tens of thousands of pediatric patients annually while also serving as a dedicated educator, researcher, and clinical innovator.
Dr. Baker earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont, completed his pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota, and went on to complete fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Medical Center. He currently holds an academic appointment as Health Sciences Clinical Professor at the UCSF Department of Emergency Medicine and is a frequent contributor to resident and fellow education across both the Oakland and Mission Bay campuses.
His research interests include pediatric head injury, bronchiolitis, and the integration of medical technology into emergency care. He has led and participated in numerous IRB-approved clinical trials, contributed to NIH- and BARDA-funded studies, and is the co-author of several peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as JAMA Pediatrics and The American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
A recognized leader in innovation, Dr. Baker is the founder and Chief Medical Officer of Aardvark Medical, a med-tech company specializing in ENT-focused diagnostic and specimen collection devices. His work has resulted in 17 issued patents and over $5 million in awarded grant funding, including a major BARDA contract to develop home-use nasal wash specimen kits for influenza and COVID-19 testing. He also serves as a Clinical Partner at Aphelion Capital, supporting medical device startups and contributing to investment diligence and clinical strategy.
Dr. Baker is actively involved in academic mentorship and is a senior advisor to the UCSF Catalyst Program, guiding early-stage medical entrepreneurs on product design, regulatory planning, and market strategy. He has also served as an expert witness in more than 20 medical-legal cases, including testimony at the federal level.
With a deep commitment to advancing pediatric emergency medicine through research, education, and innovation, Dr. Baker remains at the forefront of efforts to improve care delivery both at the bedside and beyond.
