Introduction

Michael P. Schuller is President of Atkinson-Noland & Associates in Boulder, Colorado, leading a consulting engineering firm specializing in evaluation and strengthening of masonry materials and structures. Mr. Schuller’s experience at Atkinson-Noland includes the design of industrial and residential structures, condition evaluation of structures, expert witness services, masonry repair and strengthening, and research projects involving masonry and concrete. He has worked on many commercial building evaluation projects with past clients including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, University of Georgia, University of Wisconsin, University of Missouri, the Getty Institute, National Park Service, World Monuments Fund, and private building owners. He taught a course in Masonry Structural Design at the University of Colorado, Boulder, from 2000 through 2009 and in 2016.

Mr. Schuller has over 100 publications relating to evaluation, repair, and structural behavior of concrete and masonry structures and served on the organizational committee of three conferences on nondestructive evaluation of civil structures and materials. He was the organizational chair of the 1996 “Conference on Nondestructive Evaluation of Civil Structures and Materials.” Mr. Schuller is a co-author of a book on this subject titled “Nondestructive Evaluation and Testing of Masonry Structures.”

Mr. Schuller is a Fellow of the Masonry Society and the Association for Preservation Technology, serves on the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute, and is a member of The Masonry Society, the American Concrete Institute, the Association for Preservation Technology, and the International Council on Monuments and Sites. He is active in the development of masonry test standards and training courses with ASTM Committees C-12 and C-15, RILEM Committee TC-MDT, and The Association for Preservation Technology’s Training and Education Committee.
