Introduction

As one of the only full-time attorney fee experts in the country, and the only fee expert with significant expertise at the world's largest global firms, Grant D. Stiefel has been retained as a consulting and testifying expert in dozens of matters by many of the world’s top law firms. Mr. Stiefel has opined on the reasonableness of law firm billings and hourly rates, as well as best practices for law firm timekeeping and billing. Mr. Stiefel has been found competent to testify as an expert and has testified (live and via declaration) in California state and federal courts, in JAMS and AAA arbitrations, in attorney-client fee arbitrations for the California and Nevada State Bars, and before the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. On several occasions, he has testified as an expert in the High Court of Seoul (the Korean Court of Appeals) regarding matters of California law.

Mr. Stiefel is also the principal and founder of Litigation Limited, a boutique legal bill auditing and consulting firm, and he has been retained by and/or audited invoices from many of the largest law firms in the United States and Canada, in addition to hundreds of regional and local firms. He has trained in-house counsel and C-level executives from a host of Fortune 1000 companies on timekeeping and hourly billing issues and helped corporate clients develop and implement hourly billing guidelines for outside counsel.

Mr. Stiefel is a member of the California State Bar; a trained attorney-client fee arbitrator with the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Attorney-Client Mediation Service and the San Fernando Valley Bar Association’s Fee Arbitration Panel; and a certified California State Bar MCLE instructor on legal billing issues. He has been accepted into numerous professional and expert organizations, including the National Association of Legal Fee Analysis (NALFA); the A.M. Best Certified Attorney Fee Practice Group and the Round Table Group. He is a member of the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance (CLM), where he serves on the Audit Committee.

Prior to founding Litigation Limited, Mr. Stiefel had nearly two decades of experience at the global law firms K&L Gates and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld, where he obtained favorable jury verdicts and dismissals in various state and federal courts, including some two dozen trials as first or second chair counsel. For many years, he was lead defense counsel and administrator of a multi- billion-dollar asbestos litigation portfolio, during which time he managed and supervised lawyers and firms across the nation. Since leaving K&L Gates to found Litigation Limited in early 2012, Mr. Stiefel has testified as a fee expert in more than two dozen lawsuits and arbitrations.
