Introduction

Dr. Peterson has been an internationally-recognized expert in wind damage to trees and forests for over 25 years. Beginning with his PhD earned in 1992 from Rutgers University, Dr. Peterson has published nearly 70 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals on topics of wind damage to trees and forests. In particular, Dr. Peterson has developed expertise in tree biomechanics, ecological effects of wind damage, and modeling of wind effects in forests. Beginning in 2018, Dr. Peterson has served as expert witness on four cases, in California, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Georgia, with two of those leading to depositions. Dr. Peterson for eight years served as a consultant to the California Dept. of Water Resources, on efforts to develop standards for management of trees on river levees, with the goal of reducing wind impacts. In addition, Dr. Peterson collaborates with meteorologists and engineers in the latest revision of the EF-scale wind rating system, chairing the working group on tree damage.
