John Van der Werff received his D.D.S. degree from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1982. Since that time he has been in private practice. Also, from 1982 to 1985 he held a part time teaching position at the UC San Francisco school of dentistry.
He has performed all aspects of general dentistry including dentures, root canals, extractions, preventative care, crowns, and filings. In addition, he has provided hospital, geriatric, esthetic, and complex restorative dentistry. In 2004 he limited his practice to TMJ disorders, orofacial/ craniofacial pain and dental sleep medicine. He has completed over 2000 hours of continuing education, including over 650 hours in orofacial pain. Dr. Van der Werff is a fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, and the Academy of General Dentistry, and is certified by the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.
He is a member of the American and California Dental Associations. He has had multiple leadership positions in his local dental society and currently serves on the continuing education and peer review committees. He is on staff on two local hospitals.
Dr. Van der Werff is also a qualified medical evaluator (QME) for the state of California. He is certified to evaluate claims for dental Workers' Compensation and has provided expert opinions for injured workers, attorneys and insurance companies as an AME and QME.
Dr. Van der Werff has made multiple presentations to dentists, physicians, nurses, physical therapists and the general public on many aspects of dentistry. His focus has been to educate and explain technical terms and concepts into plain English. He has been a table clinic presenter at the annual conventions of the American and California Dental Associations. He also continues to keep up with all aspects of general dentistry through continuing education and journal reading.
